Biden's Push for EVs by 2030

President Joe Biden has set a new national target for the adoption of electric vehicles in America, pushing for EVs to represent half of all new car sales by 2030. The target is being supported by such American automakers as General Motors and Ford who have pledged EV sales of between 40 and 50 percent by the year 2030.

While the new target has been signed as a Presidential Executive Order, the sales target is not a mandatory one. Rather, the document encourages U.S. automakers and the government to promote legislation and the adoption of electric vehicles. This includes plug-in hybrids, all-electric cars and trucks, and even hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Evolving Fuel Economy and Emission Standards

The Biden administration is expected to announce proposed federal fuel economy and emission standards through the 2026 model year that will build on California’s tough regulations. Automakers such as Honda, Volkswagen and Ford have agreed to the new standards. Volvo recently announced that it plans to go all-electric by 2030, while Ford and Chrysler are hoping to reach 40 percent EV adoption by that year. General Motors hopes to offer all-electric and fuel-cell vehicles exclusively by 2035.

“Today, Ford, GM and Stellantis (formerly Chrysler/Fiat) announce their shared aspiration to achieve sales of 40-50 percent of annual U.S. volumes of electric vehicles (battery electric, fuel cell and plug-in hybrid vehicles) by 2030 in order to move the nation closer to a zero-emissions future consistent with Paris climate goals,” the automakers said in a joint statement. “We look forward to working with the Biden Administration, Congress and state and local governments to enact policies that will enable these ambitious objectives.”

Senior Biden administration officials cited the adoption of EVs and the recent executive order as a job stimulator for American manufacturing, saying the new actions will support Biden’s “Build Back Better Agenda” and the bipartisan infrastructure deal.
