Lucid Gravity: New Long Range SUV
Lucid, the California-based startup that manufactures its high-tech vehicles in Arizona, has developed a well-deserved reputation for class-leading range, efficiency, and performance. The Air sedan is one of the few electric cars on the road capable of 500 real-world miles, and the Air Sapphire is one of the fastest vehicles you can buy, period. But so far, Lucid has been a small player in the market. That might change with the new Lucid Gravity SUV, which customers can now order from the company’s website.
Gravity’s starting MSRP is $79,900 for the Lucid Gravity Touring, with the high-spec Lucid Gravity Grand Touring starting from $94,900. Lucid has begun taking orders for both vehicles, with priority given to the Grand Touring Model, which is now in production with deliveries beginning in late 2025.
Lucid Gravity Range and Performance
The Gravity incorporates a lot of technology from the Air. Its compact, powerful electric drive units, state-of-the-art 800-volt architecture, and lightweight design. Lucid’s electric motors are the envy of the industry – so much so that other brands, like Aston Martin, have decided to contract Lucid to produce EV motors for their upcoming models. They are tiny, very efficient, and extremely powerful: the Gravity Grand Touring will produce over 800 horsepower, and with a similar-sized battery to the Air Grand Touring, is estimated to deliver over 440 EPA estimated miles of range.
Sure, that’s 60 miles down on what a similar setup will deliver in the sleeker and lower Air Grand Touring sedan, but it comes with a lot more space, and a lot more versatility. The Gravity offers a standard three-chamber adaptive air suspension, which can seamlessly adapt to different kinds of terrain, helping retain a smooth ride on any surface as well as confident handling in the corners.
Inside The Lucid Gravity
We’ve previewed the Lucid Gravity before, of course. Designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle, it has unique proportions, with a very short “hood” and an enormous passenger compartment on a relatively compact footprint; space efficiency is class-leading. There are three rows of seats, with space for up to seven adults, as well as all of their gear. Indeed, the Lucid Gravity offers up to 120 cubic feet of total usable cargo space, including in its spacious front trunk. There’s even an optional “frunk seat” that can accommodate two adults while the vehicle is parked.
Inside the efficient, aerodynamically sculpted body, the Gravity has an incredibly spacious and open interior. In addition to providing prodigious amounts of room, the design is spacious, open, modern, and flexible. From a practicality standpoint, the second and third rows of seats are easy to fold flat, and the second row (which integrates a pair of convenience tables) also slides fore and aft. The third row offers more legroom than almost any other three-row SUV, thanks to Lucid’s compact EV drive units and no fuel tank.
Technology, Luxury, and Sustainability
Up front, a giant 34-inch curved display screen builds on the interface introduced on the Lucid Air sedan. There’s also a floating “pilot panel” with controls on a quick-access touch bar, and a center console that slides open to reveal more storage. Over-the-air updates keep the software current, as well.
Like the Air, driver and passengers get a true luxury experience but executed in a sustainable way. Fit and finish is fantastic, with beautiful and tactile materials (most of which are made from recycled and sustainable materials). A “Lucid Sanctuary” mode lets owners create a more tranquil environment on the go or while charging. Simply tap the screen to activate a program of lighting, audio, and other cues to create a soothing atmosphere that can even include a guided meditation experience.
Gravity: Lucid’s Next Chapter
While the Gravity’s starting MSRP, even in Touring form, means it’s very much a luxury product (not eligible for the $7,500 tax incentive, despite being made in the U.S., unless you lease), the mere fact that it’s an SUV, and not a sedan, should result in exponentially more sales for the fledgling American startup.
To us, the design and specs of the Lucid Gravity shows just how much is possible when EVs are designed from a clean sheet of paper. Vehicles like this make us excited about what’s to come from Lucid in the future.
