Top 5 Longest Range Electric Vehicles in 2022

April 12, 2022

Electric Range is the Ultimate Luxury

When it comes to electric cars, range is still king, at least in the minds of shoppers. Even though almost every electric vehicle (EV) on the market  has more than enough capacity to make it through the daily grind, most customers still care about how far an EV can go between charges. The reality is that most EV buyers will install a home charger, alleviating any range concerns and giving a full charge every morning – but what about taking a long trip?

While electric vehicles and charging infrastructure continue to evolve very quickly, charging times for EVs are still longer than filling up a conventional gasoline vehicle – meaning “filling up” on a road trip is still less convenient. Therefore, if you frequently take long drives, you’ll want an electric vehicle with as much range as possible.

Perhaps it’s no surprise, given the relatively recent rise of electric driving technology, that the longest-range EVs are some of the most expensive EVs on the market – only one vehicle on our top five list costs less than $90,000. On the other hand, the more you drive an EV, the more you save compared to driving the same distance using gasoline – particularly with today’s fuel prices.

The 5 Longest Range Electric Vehicles in 2022

Here is our list of the longest range electric vehicles available in America listed from lowest to highest range based on EPA ratings. All EPA-rated ranges and mile-per-gallon efficiencies are estimates only. Actual mileage and efficiency may vary.

Active safety includes a battery of sensors to scan the road ahead, to provide automatic emergency braking; active cruise control active steering assist; rear cross-traffic alert with pedestrian detection, and more. The navigation system that uses augmented reality technology, while biometric authentication lets you unlock and start the car using your fingerprint. While a more powerful EQS 580 is available, the 450+, with rear-wheel drive and the biggest battery, gives the greatest range.

2022 Tesla Model X

2022 Tesla Model X

EPA-Rated Range: 351 miles / Base Price: $98,940 before incentives

Proof that great aerodynamics help deliver exceptional range: the teardrop-shaped big Tesla Model X SUV is the only high-rider on this list, though its top range is more than 50 miles down on the similarly-powerful 2022 Model S sedan. Tesla has upgraded the Model X for the 2022 model year. Its totally redesigned interior features a pair of large, high-resolution screens – with the central screen now in landscape rather than portrait mode – as well as significantly improved materials and the controversial “yoke” steering wheel. Multi-device Bluetooth, wireless and USB-C charging is standard for every one of the seven passenger, with enough power to fast-charge your tablets and laptop. 670 horsepower means it will leave most gasoline sports cars in the dust with a 3.8 second 0-60 time, while “falcon wing” doors add an exotic touch. Choose the smaller 19-inch wheel for maximum range.

2022 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD

EPA-Rated Range: 358 miles / Base Price: $45.940 before incentives

America’s top-selling electric car also has one of the longest ranges on record. Inside, the Model 3 is roomy and comfortable, though all controls are consolidated on a single touch panel. The midsize Tesla Model 3 sedan is also a lot of fun to drive, with sharp steering and impressive handling. With great range and other impressive attributes – as well as Tesla’s Supercharger network – it’s no wonder the Model 3 has proven to be such a sales success.

2022 Tesla Model S Long Range

2022 Tesla Model S Long Range

EPA-Rated Range: 405 miles / Base Price: $94,990 before incentives

One of the stalwarts of the EV market, the model S has been on sale for almost a decade, and Tesla continues to improve is performance and range. For a car as large, capable, and luxurious as it is, the Model S’ efficiency is impressive, with an EPA-rated 120 MPGe. The all-wheel drive Long Range edition ekes out 405 miles from its 99.3-kWh battery – better than cars like the Audi E-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan, which have similarly-sized batteries. Tesla’s in-car tech is also rock-solid after 10 years of improvements. For 2022, the interior has been significantly upgraded with better finishes and quality, though you may find it difficult to adjust to the new “yoke” steering system.

EPA-Rated Range: 516 miles / Base Price: $139,000 before incentives

Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise that the longest-range vehicle on this list is also the most expensive. The new Lucid Air starts with a $77,400 model with a 406-mile rating – which would already make it the longest-range vehicle on this list – but it’s the Grand Touring edition that tops 500 miles. This is remarkable given that its 112-kWh battery isn’t that much bigger than competitors. With a staggering 800 horsepower and all-wheel drive, it also is set to deliver searing straight-line performance. The Air Grand Touring comes with DreamDrive Pro, an advanced driver-assistance package with has 32 sensors and 14 cameras, providing active cruise control and many active-safety functions including surround view monitor, blind spot display, cross traffic protection, automatic emergency braking, and even autonomous parking assist.
