Long a pioneer in the development of hydrogen fuel cells, Toyota is consolidating its hydrogen research and development efforts in California, in a new campus called Toyota Motor North America Hydrogen Headquarters (H2HQ). It’ll support a wide variety of hydrogen projects that go well beyond passenger cars.

Toyota has been a big believer in hydrogen. It is now selling the second-generation Mirai, a fuel-cell electric vehicle that uses compressed hydrogen gas in a tank to power a fuel cell, which powers an electric motor. But why does Toyota still believe in hydrogen? Let's find out.
