2025 Honda Civic Hybrid Review

The Honda Civic is already one of the most fuel-efficient cars you can buy in America, and it is a perennial best-seller thanks to its combination of efficiency, space, quality, resale value, and its fun-to-drive nature. Few cars combine all these virtues in such an affordable package – and the Civic is about to get even better with the introduction of the new 2025 Civic Hybrid. Not only does it offer even more efficiency than before – with a combined EPA fuel economy rating of 50 mpg – but it’s also one of the most powerful Civic models ever.

2025 Civic Hybrid Models

Unlike the previous Civic Hybrid, which was its own trim level, the Civic Hybrid is now available in Sport and Sport Touring trim levels, and buyers can also choose between sedan and hatchback body styles. (A gasoline-only Civic, available in LX sedan and Sport sedan and hatchback variations, is also available.) Honda estimates that the new Civic Hybrid models will represent about 40 percent of total Civic sales when they land in dealership showrooms this summer.

With such a huge percentage of total sales being hybrid, Honda sees the 2025 Civic as a key step in its electrification strategy – one which kicked off with the launch of the current CR-V Hybrid, which also represents a large portion of the crossover’s sales. The road ultimately leads to the all-electric Prologue SUV, already available, as well as a new generation of all-electric car and SUV products, due around 2027. Hybrid models already account for a quarter of Honda sales in the U.S., and the brand plans to be fully zero-emissions by 2040.

Honda Civic Hybrid Driving Experience

What’s perhaps most remarkable about the new Civic Hybrid is that it’s the most powerful Civic model ever – in fact it’s the most powerful Civic other than the track-focused, limited-edition Civic Type-R. Its four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine is paired with two electric motors to produce a combined 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque – all while delivering stupendous 50-plus mpg fuel economy.

A continuously-variable transmission features “linear shift control” to make it feel more sporty, simulating gear shifts under acceleration. There’s enough performance here that the previously-available gasoline turbo engine has been eliminated. Selectable driving modes include Econ, Normal, and Sport, which adjust how the powertrain responds, the weight of the steering, and even the layout of the instrument cluster. Civic Sport Touring Hybrid models even have a new Individual drive mode that enables further customization.

Honda’s dual-motor hybrid system provides more power than a single-motor system, and also maximizes efficiency by providing additional regenerative braking. Four levels of regenerative braking are available, which can be easily selected using paddles on the steering wheel, to provide drivers with plenty of control on winding roads and in the city.

The Civic’s suspension setup has been optimized for the hybrid version, with unique springs and dampers and even s specially-developed tire to improve efficiency and reduce noise. That’s because, in addition to being the quickest mainstream Civic you can buy, the Hybrid is also the quietest and most refined, featuring active noise cancellation and a robust noise-reduction package that makes the most of the silent running offered by the electric motors.

2025 Honda Civic Design

All new 2025 Civic models feature a more aggressive front-end design, darker tail lamps, and an overall sharper look. Hybrid models get distinctive body-color trim around the headlights and an aerodynamic front spoiler, while Sport models feature darker trim and 18-inch wheels finished in black. The top-of-the-line Sport Touring Hybrid model has exclusive machine-finished wheels to distinguish it.

Inside, the Civic’s excellent interior has also received numerous updates. We’ve always loved the Civic’s clean, simple design and high-quality materials; now, you have the choice of black or grey upholstery and upgraded controls. The Sport Hybrid comes with a standard moonroof, heated front seats, and dual zone climate controls, while the Sport Touring Hybrid adds leather seats, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, larger 9-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, and a wireless phone charger. Built-in Google technology includes Google Assistant, Maps, Play, and more – all operable with simple voice controls.
