A Turning Point for GMC: the Sierra EV
GMC’s introduction of the all-new Sierra EV shows the brand’s commitment to the electric revolution. The third, and by far the most important, electric vehicle in GMC’s portfolio, the new Sierra EV pickup truck joins two GMC Hummer EV models in the company’s rapidly evolving lineup.
Launching in 2024 with the top-of-the line Edition 1 trim, the new Sierra EV offers uncompromising pickup truck capability as well as up to an estimated 400 miles of range on a full charge. In 2025, the high-end Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 will be joined by more mainstream models, offering a greater variety of choice and price points for consumers. In concept and technology, it is similar to the Chevrolet Silverado EV, but looks and feels more premium.
GMC Sierra EV: Charging and Power
The new GMC Sierra EV is underpinned by General Motors’ versatile and dedicated electric Ultium platform, which enables impressive versatility and optimal performance in an all-electric truck. Not only does Ultium provide impressive range, it also features an 800-volt electrical architecture, a feature more commonly found on expensive luxury EVs. The Sierra EV can charge at up to 350 kW – adding up to 100 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes. This makes Sierra EV will be the fastest-charging truck in the segment.
In addition to its impressive range and charging capability, the all-wheel drive Sierra EV Edition 1 delivers a staggering 754 hp and 785 lb-ft of torque in a so-called “max power” mode – making it more powerful than some high-end sports cars. Front and rear electric drive motors push power to the wheels via an electronic all-wheel drive system, making for exceptional traction and capability in almost every driving scenario. There’s also an adaptive air suspension that enables a more comfortable ride as well as providing the ability to raise or lower the truck.
Additionally, an on-board Power Station Pro allows the truck to be used as a mobile power source in multiple situations, similar to the Ford F-150 Lightning. With the available Ultium power bar accessory, the 2024 Sierra EV offers 10.2 kW of off-board power through up to 10 electrical outlets that can help power tools and other accessories on the trail or at a campsite, as needed. When properly equipped, the Sierra EV Denali’s Power Station Pro can help charge another electric vehicle. Or, in the right configuration, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 can even power a home’s essential necessities.
Interior Tech and Luxury
The GMC Sierra EV offers a portfolio of impressive technologies that work together to make every drive special. Hands-Free Start turns the vehicle on automatically when the driver enters with a key fob. Once in the vehicle, the driver simply has to put their foot on the brake and put the vehicle into gear and they are ready to go.
A bold “welcome” animation spans multiple high-resolution display screens, the center point of which is a large, 16.8-inch-diagonal touchscreen – the first portrait-oriented screen in a GMC vehicle. It’s customizable like a smartphone, allowing the driver to reposition controls to their preference. The screen can also be “split” to operate up to three apps simultaneously.
Luxurious touches include an all-new, panoramic fixed glass roof that stretches above both rows of the cabin, creating an open-air ambience and a greater sense of spaciousness. The roof is infrared-reflective and has a UV coating to help keep the cabin comfortable. On the Edition 1, a new quilting pattern on the seats matches the design of the bold front end of the exterior, and there are unique materials including authentic open-pore wood on the instrument panel. Even the wireless phone charger is finished in wood, creating a modern feel of uninterrupted lines and surfaces.
Space and Versatility
The Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 will be offered exclusively in a four-door crew cab configuration with an integrated 5-foot, 11-inch cargo bed. Storage capacity is maximized with the innovative “MultiPro Midgate,” which when folded down provides 9 feet of storage between the cab and the tailgate.
A 60/40-split second-row seat offers four configurations that allow owners to haul gear or equipment while still accommodating passengers, and an available tonneau cover allows longer items such as a kayak or surfboard to be stowed under a lockable, weatherproof cover.
At the front of the vehicle, a spacious frunk offers lockable weatherproof cargo space with two drains where the engine would be, along with a 120-volt power outlet.
Finally, the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 has a towing capacity of up to 9,500 pounds, with up to 1,300 pounds of payload.
