More Cars Can Access Tesla Superchargers

Throughout 2023 and 2024, almost every manufacturer selling cars in the U.S. announced their intention to adopt the Tesla-style North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port for their electric vehicles – thereby granting drivers access to North America’s most reliable and highly-rated charging network. But, in the wake of layoffs at Tesla, progress has been slow: until recently, only Ford and Rivian had finalized their arrangements with Tesla, with Hyundai announcing that 2025 model vehicles would adopt the Tesla standard, starting in fall 2024. But now, General Motors has announced its customers will soon be able to access the Tesla charging network.

That means if you drive a Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, or Hummer electric vehicle, you will soon have access to over 17,800 Tesla Superchargers – as well as 231,800 Level 2 and DC fast chargers on numerous networks across North America. Tesla network access makes ownership of vehicles from these brands more convenient, taking some of the stress out of stopping to charge on long-distance road trips.

How Can GM Drivers Access Tesla Chargers?

What’s cool about GM’s arrangement with Tesla is that GM drivers won’t need to set up a Tesla user account to use Tesla chargers – all charging is managed through their vehicle’s existing mobile app. GM’s app, powered by OnStar, makes it easy to:

  • Find EV chargers on either the Tesla network or any other compatible network
  • Start a charging session on any connected charger
  • Plan road trip routes including charging stops
  • Monitor your vehicle’s charging status
  • Operate many vehicle functions and features remotely

Because GM’s mobile app is connected to OnStar, payment for charging sessions happens automatically through the app – there’s no need to use another app to initiate charging, have multiple user accounts, or swipe a credit card at a charging station. You simply initiate a charging session with the app, and are billed accordingly.

GM NACS DC Adapter

In order to physically plug into Tesla chargers, owners of current General Motors electric vehicles like the Cadillac Lyriq; Chevrolet Bolt, Blazer, Equinox, or Silverado; or GMC Hummer EV, will need a physical adapter, which can be ordered through the parts department of your local dealer. Unlike Ford, GM is charging for the adapter – the MSRP is $250, and it can be ordered now.

Portable and powerful enough to connect your vehicle to the fastest available charging level, GM’s NACS DC adapter will let you connect to all kinds of NACS DC-compatible chargers, including Tesla Superchargers. It can be stored in your glove compartment so it’s always there when you need it.

GM’s Commitment to Convenient Charging

With the addition of Tesla Superchargers to its ecosystem, GM customers will have access to a huge number of chargers across North America, increasing convenience for all its drivers.

In addition to adding the Tesla network to its vehicles’ charging options, the company is also a founding member of Ionna, a joint venture formed by eight manufacturers to create a new high-powered charging network. Ionna has committed to building more than 30,000 high-speed chargers in urban and highway locations throughout North America.
