GM Energy Now Has High Speed Charging Stations in 25 States
Range anxiety is quickly becoming a thing of the past as more and more high-speed chargers open up along major travel routes. The latest comes from GM Energy, Pilot, and Flying J, who now have 130 high-speed stations in 25 states.
New High Speed Charging Network
In 2022, Pilot Company, owner of Pilot gas stations and Flying J service centers across the U.S., announced a major collaboration with GM Energy to bring high-speed EV charging to heavily trafficked travel corridors across the U.S. Now, less than three years later, the two companies, together with charging provider EVgo, are celebrating 130 locations across 25 states – another step in marking long-distance road trips more convenient for drivers.
The expanded charging network includes some very high-traffic corridors on major interstate highways, including I-75 between Michigan and Georgia, as well as important regional routes like Minneapolis, MN to Milwaukee, WI; Detroit, MI to Cleveland, OH; San Antonio, TX to Houston; and Dallas, TX to Nashville, TN.
24-Hour High-Speed Charging with Amenities
Every GM Energy charging station at a Pilot or Flying J is well-lit and accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They all feature modernized restrooms and around-the-clock staffing. Many of the Pilot charging stations have overhead canopies and pull-through charging stalls that can accommodate EVs that happen to be towing trailers.
The chargers installed at the Pilot and Flying J locations deliver up to 350kW to compatible EVs – helping folks recharge their electric cars in as little as 15 minutes, meaning they can get back on the road quickly. The chargers are also equipped with Plug-and-Charge, meaning many EV models can simply plug in to initiate a charging session – no fumbling with apps or credit cards. Drivers of GM electric cars from Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, and other brands, can also access extra features through their mobile apps.
More EV Charging Stations to Come
Of course, 130 locations in 25 states is just the tip of the iceberg. GM, Pilot, and EVgo have committed to building 2,000 fast-charging stalls at up to 500 locations, so a lot more are to come. The companies promise that future locations will include even more premium amenities, including comfortable lounges, free wi-fi access, and on-site restaurants in addition to grab-and-go food and beverages.
As electric vehicle sales and adoptions continue to grow in the U.S. (2024 sales reached 1.3 million, with sales in the fourth quarter up 15 percent year over year), convenient and reliable charging will become even more important. That’s especially true for the next round of EV adopters, who may not have a garage or a driveway where they can install a home charger.
The Future of Charging on the Go
Networks like the one being established by GM Energy and Pilot should mean that for more drivers, hitting the road will come with less anxiety about where to charge, making it easier than ever to switch to an electric vehicle. Drivers should be able to focus on the adventures ahead of them, while seamless and convenient charging fades into the background.
