If you thought last year’s MG Cyberster electric roadster looked good, wait until you see the MG Cyber GTS, a sleek fastback coupe. Too bad it’s unlikely to ever be seen on American roads.

New MG EV Sports Car

Hot on the heels of the attractive and very well-received MG Cyberster electric convertible – which is already on sale in China and which goes on sale in Europe in August 2024 – MG has showcased a hardtop version, called the MG Cyber GTS. Unveiled at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, the Cyber GTS is currently a concept car only, but it gives strong hints of what a coupe version of the Cyberster could look like.

MG says that the shape of the Cyber GTS is inspired by a race car from the late 1960s called the MGC GTS Sebring, which competed at the 1968 12 Hours of Sebring race in the prototype class and had the best-ever result for the MG factory – third in class and 10th overall, a great result for such a compact and lightweight car competing against exotic racing machinery. Only six of the plucky, attractive little cars were made, but they’ve become legends of MG lore.

MG Cyber GTS Drivetrains and Performance

While technical details about the Cyber GTS are slim – the vehicle shown at Goodwood was a non-running design model – it shares the same basic dimensions as the Cyberster, with the same friendly face, long hood, and distinctive rear lights. Because space doesn’t have to be set aside for a folding roof, the Cyber GTS has a pair of small rear seats, making it a 2+2 coupe that, in a pinch, could transport four people, or two adults and two children. The fastback shape looks sleek and attractive, and there are some aggressive aerodynamic additions, including winglets on the front of the car and a more aggressive rear diffuser.

Should the Cyber GTS enter production, we would expect it to share the same basic technical specifications as the MG Cyberster convertible. That car comes in two configurations. There’s a single-motor, rear-wheel drive version with 335 hp, and a 503-hp all-wheel drive version with dual motors. Both setups share a 74-kWh battery, which gives decent driving range, especially for a sports car. Neither is a lightweight, weighing in at over 4,000 pounds, but the EV motors provide instantaneous torque and passing power, making them feel nimble and responsive on the road.

MG Cyberster and Cyber GTS Pricing and Availability

It's likely that, given its commercial success in Europe and China, that MG would be keen to put the Cyber GTS coupe into production. Whether or not we’ll ever see it in the U.S. is another question. These days, MG is a division of China-based SAIC Automotive, and MG models are built in China – meaning that any cars they would sell in the U.S. would be subject to huge import tariffs. With a starting MSRP in Europe equivalent to over $60,000, such tariffs would simply price the MG EV sports car out of the market. Still, it is nice to see an increasing diversity in the kinds of electric vehicles available, beyond the typical sedans and crossovers.
