This video offers a guide to buying a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). It covers the factors to consider, such as range, charging infrastructure, and total cost of ownership. The video also compares new and used PHEVs and provides tips for making an informed purchasing decision.
Buying a plug-in hybrid offers a way to enjoy most of the benefits of an electric car while retaining the convenience of a gasoline-powered vehicle. Compared to regular hybrids, plug-in hybrids have larger batteries that allow you to drive on electric-only power for up to 60 miles before the gasoline engine steps in, depending on the model. This makes a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, great for daily commutes and long trips. A plug-in hybrid's electric technology means more miles per gallon than a traditional gasoline-powered car. You can get 40 miles per gallon or more. That's in addition to the distance you can drive emissions-free on electric power alone. The total range of most PHEVs is between 500 and 600 miles. Besides saving money at the pump, a PHEV can have lower emissions than gas-only cars, so long as you plug it in to charge the battery. A plug-in hybrid can be charged overnight using a Level 1 charger, or a Level 2 charger can fully charge a plug-in hybrid in about 3 hours. Plug-in hybrids are a great introduction to the experience of driving a green car. You get instant power and quick acceleration. A PHEV is also completely silent when you are in electric mode. Because plug-in hybrids use electricity to recharge their batteries, some are also eligible for various federal and local incentives. Try the Green Cars Personalized EV Incentives Calculator to explore cars that qualify. As with any recommendation, determining if a PHEV is the right choice really depends on how it will be used, but for many buyers, a plug-in hybrid is the perfect middle-ground vehicle. In a few years, EVs might have solid-state battery packs that will take them 600 miles or more on a charge. With range anxiety vanquished, switching from a PHEV to an all-electric car in the future will be a piece of cake. Thanks for watching.
