Charging a plug-in hybrid or electric car is similar to charging your phone or laptop. Most drivers will plug it into a charger every night, just like your phone. But unlike a gasoline car, you won't wait until the battery is almost empty before charging. You'll just plug it in when you're not using it. In addition to charging at home, chargers can be found in public areas where you can fill up for a fee. There are 3 main levels of chargers for electric cars. Level 1 chargers are the slowest and are best for plug-in hybrids only. They use a 120-volt outlet, like you'd use to charge your phone, and typically only give you about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging. A full charge on a Level 1 charger might take a couple of days to fully charge an electric car. A plug-in hybrid with a smaller battery can be charged on a Level 1 overnight. Level 2 chargers are much faster and perfect for charging at home or work. They use a 240-volt outlet, like you'd use for an electric stove or dryer, and can deliver 12 to 80 miles per hour of charging, depending on the charger. A Level 2 charger will fully charge an electric car overnight, or a plug-in hybrid in a couple of hours. Level 3 chargers are the fastest and can be useful for longer trips. They use DC, direct current, instead of AC, alternating current. A Level 3 charger can typically fully charge an electric car in less than an hour. Level 3 chargers cost more to use, and you'll usually only find them in public places. They're too bulky and expensive to install at home. So what's the best way to charge for you? For a plug-in hybrid, you'll mostly use Level 1 or 2 charging. But for a full electric, you're going to want a dedicated Level 2 charger for regular use. And you'll want to know where to find Level 3 charging when taking longer trips. And of course, it's always a good idea to check with the manufacturer for recommendations on the best way to charge your particular electric car. Thanks for watching.
