This video provides an overview of the different types of batteries used in electric vehicles. It explains the advantages and disadvantages of each type, including lithium-ion, solid-state, and other emerging battery technologies. The video also discusses the future of EV batteries and how advancements in technology are expected to improve their performance and affordability.
Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric vehicles all use battery packs. All current battery packs are designed to outlast the car, and battery warranties are generally 8 years or 100,000 miles or even more. When used in moderate climates, many of today's EV batteries can last much longer than that. There are 5 types of EV batteries. Most of today's EVs use lithium-ion battery packs. They are the best for holding a stable charge, and they're recyclable. However, their environmental sustainability is in question, given the amount of water used to mine the materials for them. You'll mostly find nickel-metal hydride batteries in hybrid vehicles. These batteries will last longer than lithium-ion batteries and are safe to use, but they have less energy density and are expensive to produce. Lead-acid batteries have been around for a long time and are inexpensive and safe to use. However, they have a short life and don't do well in cold weather. They are only used to power supplemental auxiliary features, like providing backup power to power steering. Like lead-acid batteries, ultracapacitors are used as secondary storage devices. They can also give EVs an extra boost of power during acceleration. In the next few years, solid-state batteries may become the battery of choice for EVs. They can reduce the carbon footprint of EV batteries by nearly 40%. They are cheaper, lighter, and faster to charge. They can also give more range out of the same-size battery. Several manufacturers are testing the batteries now for use as early as 2025. Thanks for watching.
